Zighy Bay, The Pearl of Arabia
We’ve visited the incredible Six Senses Zighy Bay.
At Journeys we have been lucky enough to stay at some of the worlds finest beach resorts. Places like Nihi Sumba, Soneva Fushi and North Island hold a special place in our hearts. But now we are adding a new property to our list of favorites, the magnificent Six Senses Zighy Bay in Oman.
Nestled between the 2500 meter high Al Hajar mountains and the Gulf of Oman, on a silky smooth stretch of beach, you find this otherworldly place. It feels like you are at the edge of the world, but this barefoot paradise is only a two hour drive from the metropolis of Dubai, making it suitable also for shorter stays, even for “Scandis”.
Villas
The resort has 82 villas in different categories. Some of the villas (in all categories) have direct beach access (at an additional cost). The stone houses are built in classic Omani style and are all spacious, comfortable and all come with private pools. The entry level villas are perfect for couples and families can opt for the duplex two bedroom villa for more space. The outdoor showers are gorgeous and the Six Senses pillow menu makes sure that you all will sleep like babies. Each villa comes with a personal butler that organizes the activities and meals and helps out with any questions you might have.
Food & Wine
Considering that you’re in a resort only connected to the real world via a dirt road across the mountain, the quality of the food is stellar. The property grows herbs and veggies on the premises and what they can't grow they source from a farm nearby.
Breakfast is an opulent affair with everything from a la carte alternatives to Arabic mezze, fruits, crepes, freshly baked pastries, healthy juices and lots of veg and vegan alternatives. We had most lunches at the beach restaurant and loved the ceviche with locally caught fish and the spicy prawns, and all the salads.
For dinner you can choose between several options every night, but there is always the choice between a la carte and buffet style eating. The hotel also has a restaurant spectacularly located on the top of the mountain behind the resort. Order a car to take you up before the sun sets and experience one of the most surreal dining experiences in the world.
They don't mess around at Six Senses Zighy Bay and the sommelier has put together a very good wine list. Since you are in Oman the wines come with a hefty price tag, but at least what you are drinking is good!
Beach
Definitely the main attraction at Zighy Bay. A mile of fine grained, white coral sand, the mountain range behind you and the crystal clear waters of the Arabian sea in front of you. We are considering putting this beach on our global top three list – it's that great! If you grab one of the paddleboards at the activities center you can probably spot a turtle or three on a quiet day. When the temperatures get too high you can seek refuge under the shaded sunbeds next to the beach restaurant. For the full experience, get up with the sun and stroll alone on the deserted beach. Pure magic.
Activities
If you ask us, the whole point of being in a barefoot, luxury haven like this Six Senses property, is not doing too much. But there are things to do! There is a tennis court, a fully equipped gym, a yoga pavilion, water sport activities, different excursions and lets not forget that you are staying at Six Senses resort. The spa is out of this world!
